Accommodation is available at the inn, comprising four well appointed en suite double rooms and one spacious family room which overlooks the river. All rooms are equipped with television, high class tea and ground coffee making facilities, and a hearty breakfast is included to set you up for a day on the Lake District fells or a tour of the picturesque Cartmel Peninsula. You can be assured of a warm welcome at The Engine from our team of friendly and dedicated staff whether for a pint by the log fires in winter or for a delicious homemade meal in our Restaurant.
There are many local attractions in the area, including Holker Hall & Gardens, Lakeland Motor Museum, Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway and the 12th century Cartmel Priory, not to mention the Lake District National Park. Cartmel Racecourse is close by, and meetings take place throughout the summer and are a great day out.
The picturesque town of Grange-over-Sands is a few minutes drive away, and the bustling market town of Ulverston – birthplace of Stan Laurel of Laurel & Hardy fame – is only 20 minute by car or 10 minutes by train. Cark railway station, with direct trains to Lancaster, Preston, Manchester & Barrow-in-Furness, is only a very short walk from the inn.
We are located in the heart of the village of Cark-in-Cartmel adjacent to the River Eea, which flows from a natural spring on Newton Fell, through Cartmel and Cark and out to the sea near Chapel Island in the Leven Estuary, part of Morecambe Bay. We are close to the sea and the river is tidal in the lower parts of the village. The river’s name ‘Eea’ derives from the Viking word for ‘eel’, many of which can be seen in the river by the pub garden.
